About the journal

The biannual journal Universitas Gedanensis is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes academic articles and reviews of books and publications devoted to philosophy and theology in the broad sense. The journal was founded in 1989 by Rev. Zdzisław Kropidłowski, initially as a scientific journal of the Gdańsk Theological Institute. Currently, it is published by the Pomeranian Philosophical and Theological Society based in Gdańsk. Over the past thirty years, the journal has published articles on philosophy, theology, social sciences, and history. Many articles were directly or indirectly related to Gdańsk and Pomerania

The following authors published their works in Universitas Gedanensis: in philosophy: Rev. Prof. Kazimierz Kloskowski, Prof. Adam Synowiecki, Prof. Mieczysław Gogacz, Prof. Kazimierz Kalka, Rev. Prof. Marian Kurdziałek, Prof. Feliks Krause; in theology: Bishop Prof. Jan Bernard Szlaga, Rev. Prof. Marian Rusecki, Rev. Prof. Krzysztof Góźdź, Rev. Prof. Janusz Balicki; in social sciences: Rev. Prof. Janusz Mariański, Prof. Marian Latoszek, Prof. Aurelia Polańska; Rev. Prof. Jan Perszon, from the history of Gdańsk, Pomerania, and the Church: Prof. Andrzej Groth, Rev. Prof. Zdzisław Kropidłowski, Prof. Marian Mroczko, Prof. Władysław Odyniec, Prof. Edwin Rozenkranz, and Prof. Władysław Zajewski, Prof. Janusz Jasiński, Prof. Maria Willaume, Rev. Prof. Anzelm Weiss, Rev. Stanisław Wilk, Prof. Mieczysław Markowski, Prof. Andrzej Żurawski vel Grajewski, Prof. Marian Kallas, Prof. Stanisław Salmonowicz.

The publications addressed important topics that have entered the realm of scientific research or have been rediscovered: in philosophy, it was a reminder of the figure and achievements of St. Albert the Great; in the social sciences, research was presented on the religiosity of young people after regaining independence and the introduction of religious education in schools, on the religiosity of shipyard workers and young married couples in the Tri-City.

The history section dealt with the Bar Confederation as the first independence uprising, focused on social life in Gdańsk, especially during the Nazi occupation of Pomerania, and explored the still little-researched history of the Church in Pomerania and Gdańsk. From volume 40 onwards, the history of books, libraries, and contemporary bibliological topics took on an important role. Until 2017, the Editorial Committee included, among others: Prof. Adam Synowiecki, Rev. Prof. Kazimierz Kloskowski, Rev. Prof. Gabriel Witaszek, Prof. Janusz Jasiński, Prof. Feliks Krause, Rev. Prof. Janusz Mariański, Prof. Marian Pawlak, Prof. Anna Peck, Prof. Aurelia Polańska, Prof. Władysław Zajewski, Dr. Dariusz Spychała, and Dr. Katarzyna Wodniak. In 2018, the journal Universitas Gedanensis was given a new formula – the Editorial Board was changed, and a new Scientific Council was appointed. As a result, the biannual journal is currently developing into an interdisciplinary publication, filling a “gap” in Pomeranian journalism by combining the scattered achievements of the humanities with universal philosophical and theological discourse.

The articles published address philosophical and theological issues, particularly those developed in connection with the achievements or perspectives of other academic disciplines. In this way, the journal refers to the old, traditional understanding of Universitas—as a community of values enabling the free exchange of thoughts and ideas, with the aim of understanding reality.
